TANGIBLE AND INTANGIBLE HERITAGE IN RAC

Tangible Heritage refers to the physical artifacts, monuments, buildings, and landscapes that carry historical, cultural, or artistic significance. These are objects and structures that can be touched, seen, and measured, and they often represent the material culture of a society. Examples include architectural masterpieces, archaeological sites, manuscripts, paintings, sculptures, tools, and everyday items of cultural or historical importance. Tangible heritage serves as a direct link to the past, embodying the values, beliefs, and technologies of earlier generations, and is preserved for its educational, cultural, and historical worth. Preservation of tangible heritage involves maintaining the physical integrity of these items through conservation and protection efforts.

Intangible Heritage, on the other hand, refers to the non-physical, living practices, expressions, knowledge, and skills passed down through generations. It includes oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festivals, and craftsmanship. Intangible heritage is deeply connected to the identity and continuity of communities and cultures, playing a crucial role in the transmission of values, traditions, and knowledge across time. It is more fluid and adaptable than tangible heritage, as it evolves with social and cultural changes. Examples include languages, folk music, dance forms, traditional storytelling, culinary practices, and religious ceremonies. Safeguarding intangible heritage focuses on fostering its transmission, documentation, and revival rather than physical preservation.

Together, tangible and intangible heritage form the holistic cultural identity of societies, where tangible objects often support the practices and beliefs enshrined in intangible heritage. While tangible heritage is rooted in the physical world, intangible heritage resides in the collective memory and practices of communities, both playing a critical role in shaping human history and identity.
